Mirror, Mirror

I know I keep saying this, and I don’t mean to harp on it, but I keep bumping into things that scream out to me just how alike right-wing Islamists and right-wing Americans are.

A conservative Iranian newspaper editor said of an expected speech by Ayatollah Rafsanjani, who supports the calls for a new election:

Rafsanjani must avoid supporting the hooligans in his sermon; he must keep in mind that supporting the hooligans is support for the enemy.

In other words, any citizen who isn’t in total agreement with me and my group about what is best for our country, any citizen who openly disagrees with us or even questions us, is an enemy of our country.  Anybody who isn’t for us is against.

Boy, does that crap ever sound familiar.

How can the ascendant segment of the contemporary American right not see what’s in the mirror?

Urbino, you are asking the right to perform probing self-analysis? My friend, you need a drink.

Right wingers are the same, always and everywhere. The most regressive hard liner in the Soviet Politburo was the political blood brother of Jesse Helms,English Royalists, and Spanish inquisitors. Never mind that their ideologies might have been totally incompatible. It isn’t about ideology. It’s about mindset.

I sincerely believe that not 1 person in 1000 arrives at their political beliefs through any kind of rational process. The rightmost stick to the centroid of a pre-defined comfort zone, and will not be budged.

Wrong on the first, probably right on the second. They don’t need to perform probing self-analysis. Just observe the blindingly obvious. Identical twins don’t need to perform a probing self-analysis to realize they’re twins.

Th blindingly obvious can only be seen by those whose blinders are off and whose eyes are open. Wingers don’t qualify.
