Milestone

June 5, 2009

On a personal note, Wednesday was something of a milestone for me: exactly one year since I last drove a car.

Having biked year-round, I’ve now proven to myself that going carless is a realistic, manageable lifestyle choice.  Maybe it’s time to sell the ol’ heap.

Deep Stupid

[Please see crucial update, below.]

Today’s winner is Rep. Gary Ackerman, Democrat of New York.

The Obama administration has drawn a line in the sand on Israeli settlements in the West Bank: no increase in settlement.  At all.  Including no growth of existing settlements.

This has long been the official, public policy of the American government, but there was an off-the-books, brother-in-law arrangement between the Bush administration and the government of Israel that we didn’t really mean it.

The Obama administration ended that brother-in-law deal, and now the Israeli government and its allies in Washington are saying, “Wha? But but but . . . but Bush said it was okay!”  Why an Israeli government would expect/demand that an off-the-books policy of one administration — a policy that ran counter to America’s official policy — continue into the next isn’t clear to me, but apparently they did.  (Maybe they called ‘no backsies’?)

Anyhoo, Rep. Ackerman, though a Democrat, is among the best friends of the conservative Israel lobby in DC, led by AIPAC.  He no likey the new policy:

I do not believe in, and I do not support a settlement freeze that calls on Israeli families not to grow, get married, or forces them to throw away their grandparents.

Nice.  Is it wise to outsource your press releases to Operation Rescue, Congressman?

Update (6/5/09 6:03 pm): It seems Rep. Ackerman issued a statement today, correcting or clarifying his position (it’s not quite clear to me which).  He supports the Obama administration’s position.
