A Thought For Thursday

If we want to know what happiness is we must seek it, not as if it were a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but among human beings who are living richly and fully the good life. If you observe a really happy man you will find him building a boat, writing a symphony, educating his son, growing double dahlias in his garden. He will not be searching for happiness as if it were a collar button that has rolled under the radiator. He will have become aware that he is happy in the course of living twenty-four crowded hours of the day…

To find happiness we must seek for it in a focus outside ourselves…

No one has learned the meaning of living until he has surrendered his ego to the service of his fellow-men.

– W. Beran Wolfe, How to Be Happy Though Human, 1931

Happiness is a good, though somewhat mysterious subject. As your quotes say, a good way to find happiness is in service to others, as Jesus taught although, in a Darwinian world, as we’ve talked about a little on other posts, that would be very counterintutive. Then again, a lot about Christianity is counterintuitive.

Since happiness is often linked to money, I’d like to contribute a couple of quotes of my own:

“Money can’t buy happiness – but it can allow you to pick your own misery.”

“Money can’t buy happiness – but it does keep the kids in touch.”

Some folks seem to be naturally happy while others have a hard time finding anything to be happy about. A quote from one of my favorite writers indicates that being happy is, for many of us, a learned behavior:

“Most people are about as happy as they want to be.” Mark Twain

    Don’t worry – Be happy. 🙂

    Thanks, Cap’n…

The blog seems to have died with my thought last Thursday. I’m glad to know at least someone is out there!

I love your quotes. Now you know if you keep up the good comments, you’ll end up being a contributor?

(Wait, now I scared away my only reader.)

It’s not that the last few subjects haven’t aroused many thoughts in my old head, it’s just that I havent figured out how to put them down so that they make any sense.

Did I mention that we are also buying a house, selling our present house, trying to get ready to move all our “junk” in the next week or so, plus trying to sell my mother-in-law’s place so that she can move in with us (another house to pack up and move)? That might account for my somewhat confused state of mind.

I did notice that most of the others seem to have gone silent lately.

Oh well, back to the moving stuff. I hauled our piano to Memphis yesterday. It went to our daughteer instead of making the move.

    Have a good day.
