Listen. Do you hear that? *chirp, chirp*

That’s the sound of the mainstream media’s coverage of the Air America Radio scandal.

What’s that? You haven’t heard of this story yet?

Surely, you’ve seen news articles and editorials about the misdirection of state and federal funds intended for inner city youth and elderly care into the coffers of Air America Radio.

Surely you’ve heard news anchors speak with outrage about how the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club loaned hundreds of thousands of dollars (some estimates are up to $875K) to Air America Radio in 2003.

Surely you’ve read in-depth coverage of how Evan Cohen used his position as both the Chairman of Air America Radio and the director of development for Gloria Wise to arrange the “loan(s)” from Gloria Wise to Air America.

And I’m just as certain that you’ve heard about Air America defaulting on the loan(s).

The story is out there. You just have to look for it. The mainstream media won’t touch it.

The bottom line is that a shady character (Cohen) fostered a deal between Gloria Wise and AAR. The deal was illegal in that grant money ear-marked for specific programs was diverted to AAR to help it during start-up. None of the money was ever paid back, or at least there is no accounting trail to show that the money was ever paid back. In fact, no one seems to be able to produce documentation on the terms of the loan(s) (interest rates, payback scheme, etc.).

In April 2004, PIQUANT LLC acquired the assets of Air America from the previous ownership entity. It seems that all knowledge of the Gloria Wise loan(s) disappeared with this transition. Now that the discrepancy has been brought to light, PIQUANT refuses to accept any responsibility for the loan(s), laying full responsibility at the feet of the former owners.

By attempting to shift blame to previous owners, PIQUANT establishes yet another double standard from voices on the left. If PIQUANT can’t be held responsible for something a company they acquired did two years ago, how can Wachovia be held responsible for something its predecessors did 200 years ago?

No one knows exactly where the money went. Did the previous owners of Air America embezzle the funds? Did the money go into the coffers of Air America to prop up the floundering network?

Just pay the money back and all is forgiven. There’s only one problem with that. Air America has such low ratings and low ad revenue, that it can barely meet payroll expenses, much less pay back almost $900K of shady loans.
p.s. If you want to hear a radio host encouraging hate, check out Randi Rhodes on AAR. The poor woman is obsessed with George W. Bush.

I am surprised we even heard about Judge Mathis…

    Seeking to clarify here…

Your beef (with the longhorn staring at me! It’s not a cow!) is with the “mainstream media,” right? The wrongdoers are being brought to justice, right?

  4. SloppyDawg Says:

    News flash:

The New York Daily News, The Oregonian, and the New York Sun (which broke the story) are all members of the MSM.

So there can hardly be a cover-up, can there?

  5. Joe Longhorn Says:

This is all still under investigation. No wrongdoers have been brought to justice yet. Part of my beef is with mainstream media since they won’t cover this story about an extremely loud voice on the left that has been caught red-handed in actions directly in conflict with the values they espouse. If this had been EIB networks (Limbaugh’s broadcaster) it would be shouted from the rooftops. Part of my beef is with the shady folks that made the deal who have yet to receive their comeuppance. Part of my beef is the way that PIQUANT has tried to shrug off responsibility.

    Personal reaction:

#1: Your first beef-part sounds like a worthy discussion topic, but I know next to nothing about the media. “Sloppy Dawg,” however, offers an interesting response, and I noticed at his blog that he’s an editor in the field.

#2: Your second beef-part would be very interesting to me if there’s some sort of cover-up in the judicial process, but I don’t know if that’s the case or not.

#3: Your final beef-part just sounds typical to me of anyone accused of wrongdoing – regardless of political preference.

  7. Joe Longhorn Says:

    Sloppy Dawg,
Read that list you just posted one more time. Where are the big-market flag newspapers that normally trumpet the cause of the little guy? NY Times? Washington Post? NBC/ABC/CBS? The one article from outside NYC is from Oregon!? The two NY media outlets that reported are second-tier papers at best.

You know… I think it’s my fault that the spammers come here. I tend to get some of my ideas for posts from other blogs that I’ve read throughout the past week. Somebody has a blog bot that searches out these topics and spams them where they find them. Sorry ’bout that.

  13. Al Sturgeon Says:

No problem. It doesn’t really bother me very much…

It’s easy to delete a comment, but my original plan was to reserve that for anything vulgar.

My blog-expert friend told me to make it so that people can’t post comments anonymously, but for some reason I don’t want to do that. Not yet, at least…

I understand your point Joe, and I think that this is a story that should receive air in the media (if the story is true — and you have a point about no one covering it, except for conservative bloggers, who seem to only be writing aobut this right now). And from your previous posts on the MSM, I know we disagree about the generalization of the MSM as liberal. I would be interested in some sort of historical perspective (or something along the lines of trends and shifts) on media biasedness. You’ve posted a few good instances (in the recent past) of the media ignoring stories or running questionable stories depicting conservatives as shady. But are these anomalies or do they represent an agenda by the media? And if so, what is the agenda? You’ve yet to link these to a larger conspiracy, other than the media MUST be liberal to ignore this story. A few random questions: What does it mean to be a member of the “liberal” media? Does running a negative story about a conservative automatically make one liberal? Does ignoring a story on a possible embezzlement story in the midst of a lot of other turmoil in the world mean that the media is liberal? Would you describe the media during the Clinton administration as liberal when they were constantly digging up dirt on Clinton (some true, some not)? Innocent questions. I’m skeptical of newspapers and CNN in general anyway (not because I think they’re liberal — I just don’t find them overly informative) and try not to take them at face value.
